The Sanctuary at Two Rivers is a yoga and meditation retreat center on about 40 acres of jungle in Cabuya, where the Río Lajas and Río Cacao meet. It's set up for retreats and group bookings rather than ordinary hotel stays, and suits people who want yoga, river swimming and quiet.

What it's like

The Sanctuary is tucked into the forest behind Cabuya, on a piece of land where two rivers, the Lajas and the Cacao, come together. You leave the car behind and walk in, about 15 minutes along jungle and river paths, which sets the tone: this is a place to slow down, not a hotel with a lobby.

The property covers about 40 acres of gardens, rainforest and river. There are 2 main waterfalls on the land, private river access with natural pools for swimming, and trails where you can look for wildlife. Back at the center there's a pool and a spa offering massage.

Where you stay

Guests sleep in Zen Jungle Lofts or private Studio Houses, with screened walls that let the forest in, observation decks and solar-powered features. The buildings use eco-harvested teak. At full capacity the center hosts about 18 to 22 guests, so even a full retreat stays small.

Yoga and the program

The main practice space is a large screened yoga pagoda with a teak floor, plus open-air decks looking into the jungle. Retreats here typically mix yoga and meditation with sound healing, cacao ceremonies, breathwork and time at the waterfalls. Meals are plant-based and farm-to-table, served in an open-air dining space. Off-site trips such as snorkeling and ziplining can be arranged.

How booking works

This is the key thing to know: The Sanctuary is set up for retreats. You can join one of its scheduled retreats through the calendar on its website, or bring your own group, with the team handling planning and logistics. The site doesn't clearly offer stand-alone nightly stays, so if you want to come on your own outside a retreat, ask them directly.

Who it suits (and who it doesn't)

It suits yoga teachers looking for a venue, groups who want somewhere secluded, and individuals who'd like a structured retreat in nature. It won't suit you if you want to come and go freely by car, eat out every night or have a lively beach scene on the doorstep.

Getting there

The Sanctuary is in Cabuya, on the Río Lajas side of the village. The team gives directions to the arrival point when you book. The beaches, Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve and the island cemetery are all a short drive away. For other options see our guide to yoga in and around Cabuya.
